There are leadership advice and business books and personality tests all over today. But which advice should Christian leaders actually listen to? At Lifeway Women’s Leadership Forum in 2017, author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lysa TerKeurst, talked about the one piece of leadership advice she always gives. And sneak peek, it’s not to read a business book or find out your enneagram.
The entire video is above, and the complete transcript is below.
Many people will ask me, “Lysa, could you just give me one piece of advice as a leader?” This would be it. This is my one piece of advice.
You can do all kinds of great seminars about how to lead and what to do to motivate people and how to make your numbers work. And do all the personality tests and Strength Finders Tests and all the stuff. And all of that’s wonderful. We do all of that at Proverbs 31 Ministries and I’m grateful for that.
But the one thing, as a leader, that we must, must do to be seen as a steadfast leader in the midst of our own life circumstances being very unpredictable, is stay in the Word of God. Stay in here. Stay in here.
You can read business books all day long and it may help you in temporary places, but it will not change your heart. And if our hearts are not in the process of being changed and our perspective is not in the process of being rearranged, then we will not be able to effectively lead other people. Because it’s only the Word of God that will transform lives. And if we are leading for any other reason then we need to go and do something else. Take a vacation for a while.
Because here’s the reality: Jesus Christ saved my soul, but it was the Word of God that has saved my mind.
Especially when I have been in the midst of circumstances that I felt like I could seriously lose my mind. And maybe you haven’t been there, but if you haven’t been there then chances are you’ll be there soon. So regardless, today’s message is going to apply to you.
People are hungering and they’re thirsting for the Word of God.
