A Christmas Lesson From a Three-Year-Old

by Priscilla Shirer | December 17, 2019

At Christmas, we celebrate Jesus’ birthday. In this video from the Discerning the Voice of God Bible study, Priscilla Shirer tells a funny story about her son on Christmas morning that actually contains a powerful message that we could all learn from.

When one of my sons, my middle son, he’s now getting ready to be thirteen years old. But when he was little I remember, I think he was three years old. My oldest son, Jackson, was about five years old. We were sitting around the Christmas tree one Christmas and they had some gifts in front of them.

Now you need to know that for a lot of years, as long as I can get away with it, what my husband and I would do for Christmas was go to the dollar store and just buy a whole bunch of stuff for a dollar and just wrap it and put it underneath the tree. They didn’t know the difference so we thought we were just gonna milk this as long as we possibly can.

And I was the kind of mama that if the one toy came with a whole bunch of parts, well I would open up the package, take out all the parts and wrap them all separately. Can I get a witness? Has anybody ever done that? Yeah. It’s like you just gotta go ahead and spread that thing out just a little bit, you know?

So I remember they were sitting there, three and five, sitting with all their little dollar store toys that were treasures to them. And I remember that right before they dove into the gifts because they were so excited. You know how kids are on Christmas morning. They’re just ready to get into the thing.

And I remember that as we were sitting there my husband said, “Hang on guys. Can we just take a moment to remember Whose birthday it really is today? Whose birthday is it today?”

And my oldest son said, “It’s Jesus’ birthday!”

Well, the three-year-old saw all those gifts sitting in front of him with his name on it and he heard his brother say, “It’s Jesus’ birthday.” So he looked up and said, just innocently and wide-eyed, “Am I Jesus?”

(audience laughs)

Please pray for my children. Whoo, we laughed so hard as we tried to explain to him that no, he was not Jesus.

But you know, sometimes out of the mouths of babes…

Cause you know we think we are. Cause if we didn’t think we were God, we would let Him be God. We would stop trying to control and manipulate and contend for everything in our life. We would release to Him what is His to handle in our life and just sit back, do what Psalm 46:10 says. “Be still and know that it’s My birthday. I’m God,” He says.
