Son of Man and Son of God

by Scott James | November 17, 2021

This post is a little different from our regular posts in that it is a family devotion taken from Scott James’ new book, The Expected One, Revised and Updated. This family devotional is a great way to keep Christ in the center of your hearts and minds this Christmas.

God would give His people His one and only Son. And this Son? He’d be very special—He would be the Son of man and the Son of God. This means that the Rescuer would be specially qualified to bring sinful people back to their holy God. His nature would be so perfect and He would do His job so well that His name would be worthy of the same praise that God Himself receives.

Connect with Kids

Read aloud Isaiah 9:6:

For a child will be born for us,

a son will be given to us,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

He will be named

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Ask:

“The Rescuer would be specially qualified to bring sinful people back to their holy God.”

  • How could a small baby be called a mighty God? (Because even when He was a small baby, Jesus was fully God.)
  • How can both God and Jesus be called “God”? (The Bible tells us that God is three persons in one—God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.)
  • Why is it important to know that Jesus is both God and man? (Because being God is the only way He could live a life without sin, and being a man is the only way He could suffer and die as a punishment for our sin.)

Further Reflection

  • How does the reality of the first Advent of Christ give you confidence as you await His second Advent?

Prayer Point

Salvation is found in Christ alone. Praise Jesus for the way He is uniquely qualified to rescue us.
